UKTI Launch new Creative Industries High Value Opportunities Taskforce

NEW CREATIVE SECTOR TASKFORCE TO BOOST TRADE BY £500 MILLION

A drive to help the UK’s creative companies win high value contracts overseas will be launched by the government today.

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) will support a taskforce of the UK’s top 100 creative sector small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to win £500 million worth of high value overseas contracts in the next three years. The initiative is part of a government plan to get 100,000 more UK businesses exporting.

Together with Illustrious, companies on the taskforce include Zaha Hadid Architects, The British Museum, AKQA, ADCreative London, FutureBrand, Mother, ES Global, Factorydesign, Populous and the V&A. They span the transport, healthcare, retail, cultural developments and global sports sectors.  

Business Secretary Vince Cable said:

“The growing appetite for British design offers many opportunities for innovative firms of all sizes to boost their overseas trade and attract new investment. Collectively the creative industries already generate more than £36 billion a year for the UK economy - £70,000 every minute - and employ 1.5 million people.

“From airport interiors to ground-breaking medical devices and design exhibitions, the creative industries account for around £1 in every £10 of the UK’s exports and are crucial to building a stronger economy. With new support from UK Trade & Investment, we want to help creative SMEs access more high value supply chain opportunities across the globe."

Each company in the taskforce will have its own international expansion plan and participate in a minimum of two overseas visits each year to target high value projects.

They will also receive training, support and networking opportunities directly related to these high value opportunities from UKTI and work with International Trade Advisers to identify the projects they are most qualified to bid for.

Until recently the market for UK creativity was limited largely to Western Europe but as new markets mature and global trading channels widen, the demand for British creative expertise is escalating.

The interest, particularly from emerging markets in Asia and the Middle East and countries like Russia and Brazil, is based on Britain’s reputation as a leader in creative industries.

Creative Industries, and in particular services such as design and architecture, are a key element of all major infrastructure projects, including major sporting events. This was highlighted in the delivery of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games. The Government’s long term vision for the legacy of the Olympic Games aims to use the inspirational power of 2012, and future major sporting events, to set the long term ambitions for delivering lasting change in sport, our communities, the economy, regeneration of east London and driving forward the cause of disability equality. Just as the Games took ten years to win, plan and deliver, so legacy must be seen as a 10-year project to realise lasting change and growth - UKTI's efforts in securing a long term economic benefit increasing exports and attracting investment is part of this vision. 

UKTI’s High Value Opportunities (HVO) programme focuses on 100 projects worldwide each of which are over £500mn in budget value and where the UK can compete for at least £250mn. UKTI's ambition is to help UK businesses of all sizes secure, through the programme, £10bn of contract wins in 2013/14 and £10bn in 2014/15.

The Exporting is GREAT Campaign launched in November 2013 and will reach almost three million individuals and 700,000 businesses with more than four employees, giving them a very specific call to action: to contact UKTI to find out more about exporting. It is intended to generate over 3000 appointments with UKTI International Trade Advisers, giving small businesses direct access to expert advice, support and finance to help them export. The campaign will cost £2.4m and drive £1.2bn in incremental export revenue from the leads it generates. The campaign creative features two SMEs who have grown their business internationally as a result of UKTI advice. Their case studies are available from the UKTI press office. Trope, Illustrious and Goldsmiths create The Diosynchronoscope

A collaboration between artists and academics has produced an artwork that is being celebrated as a new way to experience animation without a screen.

 

Created by Trope, an artistic partnership between Carol MacGillivray, Bruno Mathez in association with Professor Frederic Leymarie at Goldsmiths University of London, Stylus is the latest artwork using the Diasynchronoscope technique.

 

Even though nothing in the room actually moves, physical objects are arranged so that they change incrementally in shape and position. Using a video projector and computer, they are illuminated sequentially at fast speed creating the impression of movement. The artwork is enhanced by an immersive 3D sound accompaniment created by Martyn Ware of Illustrious Company.

The Diasynchronoscope is a new experimental medium where viewers can walk around an animation and appreciate it from all perspectives. It as an audio-visual combination of ‘art, theatre and installation’.

Noise Abatement Society honours Illustrious

Illustrious have been honoured to receive the world’s first Quiet Mark Award for their Brighton based installation in 2012 – the first  soundscaping practice ever to have received such an accolade.

“Designed and commissioned by the Noise Abatement Society and Brighton & Hove City Council, 'West Street Story’ was a 3D outdoor soundscape intervention, the music for which was created by Martyn Ware of Illustrious Company. It transformed the normally chaotic and aggressive night time atmosphere to one of beauty and calm, in the heart of Brighton’s cacophonous clubbing area.”

Alexis Kirke and Martyn Ware discover compelling patterns through computer analysis of Bowie’s lyrics, album sales and music features, presenting musical “sonifications” of their results as compositions.

Plymouth University composer / research fellow Alexis Kirke and sound-artist / electronic music pioneer Martyn Ware, have discovered compelling patterns in numerical data from Bowie’s career; including song keys, computer lyric analysis results and album sales figures. Using “sonification” – the audio display of non-sound-data – they are able tohighlight the patterns. They will be playing their new sonification tunes, and explaining what this statistical music tells us about Bowie’s career.

Sonification is the audio-display of non-audio data. The most common forms are Geiger counters, and heart rate monitors. It has also been used to make patterns discernible in complex data – for example stock market data, or chemical structures have been turned into music to highlight their patterns. In this presentation, Alexis Kirke and Martyn Ware use sonification of David Bowie’s career data to help to make certain patterns in his career more “perceivable”.

To prepare data for sonification Alexis and Martyn have used statistical analyses of such things as the changes emotional content of David Bowies lyrics over the years, or the prominence of major and minor keys in Bowie songs. Other elements incorporated include album sales data. These are then mapped onto musical features such as tempo, pitch and loudness and turned into new musical compositions themselves, in an effort the make the progressions of Bowie’s artistic mood and commercial impact more understandable.

Sitting somewhere between music and statistical art, these Bowie career-sonifications should be both entertaining and informative. Alexis and Martyn will be on hand to discuss and explain their analyses and composition process.

The Bowie Career-sonification is part of “David Bowie is making a scene”, a Friday Late at the Victoria and Albert Museum, celebrating their critically acclaimed and record breaking exhibition “David Bowie is”, 23 March – 11 August 2013. The V&A has been given unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archive to curate the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie. ‘David Bowie is’  features more than 300 objects that include handwritten lyrics original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs and Bowie's own instruments. Late-night exhibition opening 18.30 – 22.00. All Friday Late activities are free.

Alexis Kirke is composer-in-residence for the Plymouth Marine Institute. Alexis has completed two PhDs, one in Arts and one in Technology. He is a member of the University of Plymouth's Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research and is best known for his stock market reality opera ‘Open Outcry’, and his live action algorithmic bio-film ‘many worlds’.

Quiet Mark to Unveil World’s First Quiet House at this Year’s Ideal Home Show

The Ideal Home Show is set to join the Quiet Revolution with the world’s first Quiet House, a showcase of the quietest technology and solutions to unwanted noise for our home, work and everyday living environments.

The Quiet House will be unveiled from the 15 March – 1 April 2013 at London’s Earls Court.

The Quiet House was pioneered by Quiet Mark (www.quietmark.com) the not-for-profit trading arm of the Noise Abatement Society charitable foundation, and developed in partnership with award winning Gregory Phillips Architects, interior designer Martin Hulbert, soundscape feature artist Martyn Ware and with lighting by Andrew Orange.

This aspirational Quiet House will be showcased to help consumers make more informed choices about the technology we buy and share our homes with and help reduce unwanted neighbour noise. Empowering us all to re-tune the sounds around us and de-stress our personal space.

Given that the average household contains around fourteen different appliances sometimes all working furiously at the same time[1], it is no surprise that around half the population have said that noise affects their quality of life[2]. Furthermore, independent research has revealed that the vast majority of consumers admit it was a mistake not taking more consideration of the noise an appliance makes at the time of purchase[3].  Around one million people reportedly went to the extent of moving home to escape noise coming from their neighbour, as one in seven people are woken by their neighbours and one in ten are kept awake by them[4].

The combined noise levels of the products, appliances and sound absorption solutions in this Quiet House are estimated to reduce decibel levels to under 40dB and make an average reduction of decibel levels or improved sound quality between 5-25dB per appliance, depending on product category. Even a few less decibels can make a big difference to the layering of sound experienced in the home environment.

Here are the awarded products and solutions in each living zone:

Kitchen/Laundry - Often seen as noisiest room in the house with most machines at work, solutions include quiet cooker hoods, fridge freezers, kettles, washing machines, tumble dryers, irons, extractor fans, food processors and quiet closing kitchen units. Garage - The Quiet House boasts a quiet hybrid car transforming driving experiences to peaceful rides. The Quiet House will show the Lexus Hybrid range plus other award winners for travel from Oxygen Scooters.

Garden - Lower noise garden tools and lawn mowers which are mainly cordless lithium ion will be showcased here with ranges from Bosch Lawn and Garden, STIHL, Husqvarna displayed.

Spanning across over 35 product categories, the Quiet Mark awarded products within the Quiet House are validated as a selection of the quietest technology and solutions currently available on the market. The official mark provides an easy labelling system at point of sale which assures consumers of a trusted assessment of noise levels.

The ‘Quiet House’ will be on display at the Ideal Home Show 2013, sponsored by Anglian Home Improvements, between the 15th March – 1st April. World premiere of one person 3D soundscape driven show

After last year's successful pilot event at the Contact Theatre, Manchester, Illustrious is proud to announce the world premiere of 'The Adventures Of Sky The Reluctant Hero' 

The Adventures Of Sky – The Reluctant Hero is a one-person show that forms part of a storytelling adventure you can interact with online and in the ‘real world’. It is written and performed by Nikky Norton Shafau and directed by The Core’s Creative Director Chris Sudworth.

The first performance in Corby is its world premiere before it tours to Amsterdam and Manchester. It also features innovative 3D sound design by Illustrious, a world-first in the creation of immersive imaginary worlds which the protagonist interacts with invisibly.

‘Do you see what I see and I see what you see?’

Sky has not slept a wink for six whole months and appears to have lost everything. Having left her home town to begin a new life in the city, her success and her senses break down. 3am: another sleepless night. A sound from deep without. The Door opens. Sky steps outside… but the world doesn’t look, feel or sound the same as it used to. Nightmares, dreams and reality blur as Sky searches for heroic capabilities to find her way back ‘home’.
