Echo City was an installation in the British Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale that described the city of Sheffield from a variety of scales. The theme of the Biennale in 2006 was ‘Architecture Beyond Building’.
Developed under the leadership of Jeremy Till, Director of Architecture at the University of Sheffield, Echo City was described as an “urban register” made up of found objects, architectural projects, photography, an immersive audio experience and (at its centre) an interactive model by Jim Prevett which invited visitors to reconfigure urban elements from the surrounding installations.
For the installation, Ware created Diaspora Magnet ‘1:10,000,000’, a soundscape that projected Sheffield’s past relationship and current engagement with the world. Illustrated by a 12-minute animated infographic, created by Malcolm Garrett, detailing Sheffield’s unique achievements in numerous fields including business, technology, music and entertainment, it presented the city as an exemplar of industrial cities everywhere.
